Gears of War is a very well made game. It redefined the Third-Person Shooter genre by placing an emphasis on cover based mechanics but more importantly it did them well.

However the writing found in the Gears of War games has always been criticized for not being up to par. Epic did try to improve that in the 3rd installment, Gears of War 3, by bringing on Karen Traviss to pen the story. Travess is no stranger to the video game world, or even the Gears franchise for that matter. She wrote a number of book for that franchise after all. That bode well for the end of the mainline trilogy, critics warmed up to the  Marcus’s battle even though some found the conclusion to leave more questions unanswered.

Epic realized that the secret for their success was outside help, as proved by Gears of War 3.

This time they went for a 2 man writing team, Rob Auten and Tom Bissell. Both, have spent over a year writing the script for Gears of War: Judgement. To see their process and the work they went through to really improve the writing the franchise, check out the video below.
