When the first screenshots of the new Thief reboot hit the internet, many comparisons were met with another hit stealth-action game, Dishonored. In the recently uploaded video by Game Informer the Goals and Inspirations for Thief, the games director Nicolas Cantin and producer Stephane Roy acknowledge the comparisons found between both Dishonored and the recently announced Thief game.

Stephane Roy says that Thief is “different” in terms of game play experiences they are going to offer with Thief. Nicolas Cantin goes into further detail stating that at release, Dishonored did feel very much like a Thief game but when you “jump in to the game, you realize it feels more like Deus Ex. A lot of choice, more action orientated.” However Cantin isn’t also afraid to criticize Dishonored, “[it] support’s stealth but [they do] not [reward] it.” With Thief, they are putting a high emphasis on pure stealth game play.

However, both developers are also very impressed with some of the things Dishonored has done, calling it “a very, very good game.” They are both fans of the peek mechanic featured in the game and have brought in something similar for the new Thief game. Roy says, “It’s the ‘same’ mechanic – different approach to realizing it.” They are also very excited with what Dishonored has done in terms of invigorating the stealth genre and, “opening the door wide open for [them] to continue the stealth genre – this type of game.”
