The developers behind the popular PC games, Red Orchestra and Killing Floor, Tripwire Interactive, have had enough of Call of Duty. In a recent PC Gamer interview, John Gibson, the president of Tripwire, wasn’t afraid to tell his true feelings about the Call of Duty franchise. Gibson “[feels] like Call of Duty has almost ruined a generation of FPS players” and he isn’t afraid to go into more detail

In his eyes, Call of Duty “takes individual skill out of the equation” and likens the experience of playing Call of Duty to a slot machine; “You might as well just sit down at a slot machine and have a thing that pops up an says “I got a kill!” battles Gibson. This greatly affects him due to the complaints he gets when Call of Duty players try out Red Orchestra, a game his company developed. He sarcastically mocks CoD fans, “This game’s just too hardcore. I’m awesome at Call of Duty, so there’s something wrong with your game. Because I’m not successful at playing this game, so it must suck. ‘I’m not the problem, it’s your game.”

Gibson does feel like he is to be blamed for the matter aswell, saying “…sometimes as designers… we screw up…we design something that’s not accessible enough, they can’t figure it out.” However he isn’t afraid to point fingers back at Call of Duty since it, “compressed their skill gap so much that these guys never needed to get good at a shooter. They never needed to get good at their twitch skills with a mouse.”

Tom Gibson has much more to say about Call of Duty, the way it has affected FPS players of today, and the current state of FPS games in the full interview at PC Gamer.
